Hi, I’m Patrick van der Helm, the founder of West Wind Signs.
My journey into the world of signage began at the age of 12 in The Netherlands. However, I was originally more drawn to graphic design and pursued a four-year course as a teenager. My journey took an unexpected turn when a perceptive teacher recognised my interest in physical design and offered me an opportunity to explore sign writing further.
In 1999-2000, I set off on a backpacking adventure across Australia. I found work in sign writing at several locations, and this hands-on experience reignited my passion for creating tangible, impactful designs.
By 2003, I decided to make Australia my home and pursued a two-year diploma in Printing and Graphic Design, which I successfully completed. After a brief stint working behind a desk, I realised my true passion lay in sign writing, so I returned to this with renewed enthusiasm.
The joy of creating something physical and beautiful has always driven me — a passion that began while working alongside my father in bathroom renovations. While graphic design was fulfilling, it was in sign writing that I found the perfect blend of creativity and craftsmanship.
I spent several years honing my skills in one sign company, learning everything from design and print to installation and car wraps. This experience paved the way for a new opportunity in laser engraving and custom trophies, where I expanded my skills into manufacturing and fabrication, further enhancing my creative abilities.
Eventually, I returned to sign writing, enriching my experiences in shop-fitting and illuminated signs. These diverse skills and experiences led me to establish West Wind Signs.
Today, my goal is to deliver exceptional signage solutions that help businesses present themselves professionally and stand out.
